During the Medieval period, India was prosperous .It was an era of stability as many dynasties ruled for many years providing a stable government to people.Under the patronage of the kings,trade and commerce flourished. A large number of new towns developed in different parts of India .Sometimes ,a large village grew into towns .
Chief towns: The towns that developed during medieval times were of different types, depending on their functions. There were administrative centers, pilgrimage centers, temple towns, craft towns, trading towns, ports and various other types of towns. Factors like accessibility, transport, infrastructure, protection from enemies, natural cover, fertility, etc. were considered before setting up these towns.
Sometimes, a town combined many functions , for example , Hampi was a center for trade in cotton and spices . It was the capital of Vijayanagar and was reowned famous for its temples.So , it was a combined commercial administrative temple town.
